Overview

The Cellar Food & Drink sits tucked away at 991 Massachusetts Ave in Cambridge, offering an inviting dive into the world of a classic neighborhood bar with a refined touch. This basement venue is a cozy nook where the atmosphere blends intimacy with an easygoing spirit, perfect for those seeking a relaxed night out without the crush of crowds. The space itself is compact yet thoughtfully designed, boasting a warm ambiance punctuated by festive Christmas lights and a distinctive copper bar top that anchors the room with character.

The Cellar caters to a crowd that appreciates straightforward drinks and good company. The bartenders exude a laid-back charm, serving up regular beers, wine selections, and an honest lineup of cocktails that complement the venue’s no-frills approach. Music lovers will appreciate the consistent classic rock soundtrack, which adds to the bar’s timeless vibe.

Food-wise, The Cellar’s menu leans toward elevated pub fare that emphasizes quality ingredients and bold flavors, though portions tend to be modest. Standout dishes like the Bacon Wrapped Dates and the Braised Then Grilled Octopus showcase the kitchen’s skill at balancing rustic appeal with gourmet flair. The Oxtail Ragu, Skate Wing paired with Rhubarb Chutney, and the Steakfrites illustrate a focus on rich, comforting plates that reflect both creativity and tradition.

While some patrons have noted fluctuations in food quality over recent years, the overall culinary experience remains satisfying for many, especially when paired with the wide selection of local and international beers, including the Speckled Hen, and house-favorite Irish Coffee. The Fish and Chips accompanied by rosemary fries and the Veggie Burger provide hearty options for those seeking familiar pub classics with a thoughtful twist.

The Cellar’s charm lies as much in its setting as in its menu. The basement bar offers a rare slice of genuine Cambridge nightlife—a place where late-night conversations unfold in a relaxed setting with attentive service and a sense of community. It’s an ideal spot for locals and visitors alike who want to unwind with a well-crafted drink and share small plates that spark connection without fuss.

In sum, The Cellar Food & Drink delivers an authentic bar experience anchored in location, atmosphere, and a menu that bridges traditional pub favorites with a subtle culinary edge. It caters to those who prize quality over quantity and prefer a laid-back environment where every detail, from the cooperative bartenders to the thoughtfully curated menu, complements a genuine night out in Cambridge.

The bar in the basement is really nice. On the small size but I like the quaint atmosphere. One of my favorite place for a drink. The food used to be great but the quality went down a notch a couple of years ago.

Great vibes, never too crowded, super chill bar tender. Classic rock on the tunes. Cooper bar top, regular drinks no funny business. Free water. Bring your own food in is ok! Bathrooms share a sink, Christmas lights!

Great food (though small portions), large selection of beer and wine, unsure if cocktails are good. Food is a bit on the expensive side for a local pub (e.g., a dish can run you $20, be tasty, but not really fill you up), but atmosphere's good, especially downstairs at the bar (restaurant style tables are upstairs). Recommend.

Amazing dive bar in a basement that is very welcoming and not pretentious. Not the typical place with loud music and 10+ TV screens, but more like a space to gather with friends. If you are visiting Cambridge and want to try a more authentic vibe, make sure to stop by. And if you are a local, this can become your neighborhood go-to place. Also, Greg’s service is fantastic. Cash only.
